Armchair Surveying

An independent family resilience project
A network of strong families building a resilient life in the Romanian Carpathians.
Good life first. Resilience second. Extreme-event protection third.
The Vision
Carpathian Haven explores the creation of a small network of independent family homesteads in the Romanian Carpathians.
We are looking for an existing rural community where families can establish their own homes, work productive land, raise children, develop practical skills, and cooperate when it makes sense.
The Romanian Carpathians offer a compelling combination of mountain landscapes, forests, agricultural traditions, rural settlements and cultural history.
The objective is not to disappear from society. It is to become part of a place worth caring for.
The Road Ahead
From studying maps to establishing real homes and working relationships.
We study the map.
Regional research, geology, agriculture, resilience, community potential and candidate scoring.
We walk the ground.
Travel, field inspection, local conversations and practical reality checks.
We decide where and with whom.
Properties, households, commitment, finances and legal structures.
We build the thing.
Homes, land, workshops, animals, infrastructure and long-term community life.

Candidate regions identified for deeper investigation.
The initial Romania-wide survey has identified promising regions across the Carpathian mountains.
The Community Model
Each family retains its own home, income, property, identity and autonomy.
Where cooperation makes sense, families can share resources such as machinery, workshops, pasture, woodland, storage and practical skills.
The goal is not independence from each other. It is independence strengthened by each other.
A Few Clarifications
Carpathian Haven is not a woodland commune, an isolated enclave, or an attempt to invent a new society.
Nor does it require matching linen trousers or agreement on every philosophical question.
It is a practical network of families seeking a good life in and around an existing Romanian village.
The project has no political party line or ideological test. What matters is trustworthiness, practical contribution, mutual respect and the ability to work together.
Extreme Scenario Planning
ECDO stands for Exothermic Core-Mantle Decoupling – Dzhanibekov Oscillation. It is a speculative geophysical hypothesis proposing that changes within the Earth could lead to major rotational reorientation and catastrophic inundation.
This hypothesis is not an established scientific prediction. Carpathian Haven treats it as one extreme scenario to examine during geographical resilience research.
Site selection also considers ordinary living conditions, water and food security, conventional natural hazards, and prolonged infrastructure disruption.
Would this still be an excellent place to build a resilient life if the extreme scenario never occurs?
Our answer must be yes.
Become Part of the Expedition
We're looking for thoughtful, practical people who want to contribute to the research and explore what a resilient future in the Carpathians could look like.
